There are cars and then there are concept cars, the latter being fleshed out teasers in various stages of development that are unveiled to whet metaphorical palates, gauge the market and point toward what possibly lies head. Sometimes a concept car is introduced and never heard from again, other times it’s tweaked and then brought to the masses, not unlike a movie edited after audience testing. One concept car unveiled at the 2017 Geneva International Motorshow that seems destined for production is the Mercedes-AMG GT, an aggressively superior hybrid that’s built to endure, outlast and impress by way of an eye-catching curvy frame, the latest technological fortifications and heaps of automotive power.

This year marked the 50th anniversary for Mercedes-AMG and the new GT concept car was as much an ode to the brand’s veritable legacy as it was a signifier of the brand’s healthy future. As such the four door stunner packs all the visual heft that we’ve come to expect from a Mercedes-AMG coupe, flaunting a toothy front grille that almost resembles a shark’s mouth when viewed from certain vantage points, along with plenty of sleek curves, side air intakes, width-based rear assembly and a brilliant bright red carbon fibre body. Of course all the design specs in the world wouldn’t mean a thing without a forward-thinking powertrain making the car go and that the GT most definitely has. The car combines a 4.0 litre V8 biturbo engine with an overachieving electric motor to deliver enough EQ Power+ and speed to take the whip from 0-100 in three seconds. Yeah, this baby can move.

“With the Mercedes-AMG GT Concept we give a preview of our third completely autonomously developed sports car. We extend the attractive AMG GT family to include a four-door variant…Impressive driving dynamics coupled with high efficiency, resulting from an innovative drive system and tailored to the vehicle segment in question – that is Future Performance made by AMG,” says Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. Given the enthusiasm put forward by both the crowd and the company, it’s safe to say this top-shelf hybrid coupe will go from concept to reality sooner than later.
