The New Trier community mourns the death of Bruce Woodbury who passed away suddenly. He died leaving behind a reputation as a legendary character in high school swimming. He was announced dead through a publication released on social media which clearly informed the public of the tragic event.
Woodbury was a New Trier High School graduate who served as both head and assistant coach for the boys’ and girls’ swimming teams. His legacy will always be remembered for many years to come, since his impact on the sport and the lives of his athletes was significant and impactful during his career as coach.
Bruce Woodbury accomplished extraordinary success over the course of several decades during his tenure as a coach at New Trier. He served as the head coach of the girls’ swimming team for a period of 18 years, during which time his teams achieved 11 state championships.
During his time as coach, his teams bagged a total of 18 state trophies, not forgetting the six runners-up and one third-place triumph. on at least four occasions, he was recognized as Sectional Coach of the Year on numerous occasions and as State Coach of the Year; this was truly a testament to his dedication and expertise.
Even though his was loved and impactful as a coach, his influence really transcended championship titles. He coached countless All-State and NICA All-Americans, thereby developing the potential of young athletes and instilling a passion of a swimming, coaching commitment to the sport and coaching players was evident at every practice, meet, and championship.
