Shekinah Elmore, MD, MPH, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina has sadly passed away. Professor, researcher, and radiation oncologist Dr. Shekinah Elmore was a shining example of equity and empathy in the field of oncology at UNC-Chapel Hill. Her lengthy essays in prestigious medical journals, where she promoted compassionate care and coping with uncertainty, were inspired by her unique experience as both a cancer patient and a healthcare practitioner. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
About Dr. Shekinah Elmore
Despite receiving a lung and breast cancer diagnosis, Dr. Elmore enrolled in medical school at the age of 27. She became a radiation oncologist as a result of her personal struggle with a p53 gene mutation, imparting to us the lesson that “a devastating genetic diagnosis means learning to live with uncertainty.”
Shekinah’s remarkably distinct and intersectional viewpoint enabled her to have a great deal of empathy for other people. Her empathy, together with her strong work ethic, sense of purpose, and extraordinary brilliance, have made her a smart, kind friend, an innate leader, and—most importantly—a change-maker. We have discovered the genuine meaning of friendship, companionship, bravery, love, and resiliency thru Shekinah’s life. She has taught us the art of living fully, loving completely, and handling hardship with dignity. In addition, she cherished poetry, art, music, and culture and, in every situation, found happiness in the little things as well as the large.
GoFundMe
Above all, as a wife and mother, Shekinah’s priorities were her five-year-old son William and her husband Adam, an incredible high school English teacher who teaches with selflessness. Her top priority when making plans for the future was ensuring her family will have the resources and assistance they required. Her family will receive direct support from this GoFundMe page, which was organized by Divya Yerramilli.
Summary
The impact of Dr. Shekinah extends well beyond her career accomplishments. Her husband Adam and their 5-year-old son William were her top priorities as a wife and mother. Please help me, along with others, to grant her greatest wish—that her family be provided with the resources and assistance they require. Her obituary and funeral arrangements will be announced by her family.
